You don’t know!
“Bill,” I said, “it’s been three years, and nobody wants me to know a single thing about what happened back then.”
He didn’t answer. I asked again, and still, silence. I turned to a very close friend, hoping for a sliver of honesty. “Could you please tell me what happened three years ago?” Silence again.
I sat with the quiet, realizing these were the only people I truly knew in Canada, yet they had nothing to say. But their actions spoke: the laughter, the tracking, the manipulation—and not just from them, but from everyone around me. Nobody had the nerve to tell me the truth, terrified of the fallout. But as I’ve told them before, Palestinians don’t get happy endings at the end of the movie.
Still, I believe there are good people who will help me piece the truth together, bit by bit. I already hold so many of the pieces; now it’s just a matter of connecting the tricks, the riddles, and the intentional misdirections.
Who knows—maybe I already know as much as they do. It’s almost funny when someone assumes you’re in the dark just because you aren’t speaking up. When the person in power believes they’re fully in control, there’s no room for real conversation anyway. So, let’s just wait and see who actually knows what in the end.
