By Ed Walwail – Labmations Studio
When I first imagined the Tutti Fruitti School Band, I wasn’t just thinking about music — I was thinking about joy. I wanted to create a group of characters that could make children laugh, dance, and discover the magic of teamwork. And what better way to do that than with a band made entirely of lively, illustrated fruit?
From the start, the goal was clear: each fruit in the band had to have a distinct personality, a unique musical role, and a story kids could connect with. Mango Max might be the cool drummer with endless energy, while Banana Bella is the graceful violinist who keeps the group in harmony. Every member brings their own flavor — literally and figuratively — to the stage.
The Creative Process
Working on this book has been a mix of storytelling, design, and music appreciation. I start with character sketches, experimenting with how a grape might hold a saxophone or how a watermelon could play a double bass. Then comes the storytelling: how did these fruits meet? What inspired them to form a band? And how do they solve problems together?
Each spread in the book is designed to be visually exciting and musically inspiring. I want children to feel the rhythm in the illustrations, to imagine the sound of each instrument, and to see how the characters support one another.
More Than Just a Band
The Tutti Fruitti School Band isn’t only about catchy tunes. It’s about teamwork, diversity, and creativity. Each character comes from a different “part of the garden,” bringing their own style and sound. Just like in real life, it’s the blend of differences that creates something truly special.
Why It Matters
As I continue working on the Tutti Fruitti School Band, I’m reminded daily of why I create: to inspire, to entertain, and to connect with readers young and old. Stay tuned — there’s more music to come. And who knows? The next band member might be your favorite fruit.
